Billy Russo was born to Carla Russo, who was a drug addict and a prostitute. His father presumably left when Carla was pregnant and was possibly one her clients. Billy’s mother abandoned him outside of a fire station in Albany, New York.Billy then entered the system, living in various foster homes over the years. One of these happened to be the Ray of Hope group home.Billy adored baseball and wanted to be the next Joe DiMaggio despite the fact that he was too poor to afford baseball gear like the other children.He was around ten or eleven at the time when he was a victim of attempted molestation by one of the caretakers at the group home. Billy was able to fend him off with a stickball bat, but didn’t come out unscathed. His attacker, Arthur Walsh, in turn broke Billy’s arm, ripping his rotator cuff in three places. Out of fear that no one would believe him, Billy lied and said the injury was from another child who was bullying him, never giving a name. He never lived down not telling who actually hurt him, knowing that his abuser most likely went on to continue his cycle of abuse.In his early adulthood Billy socially transitioned and with help from support groups he was able to afford hormones and eventually get top surgery. After his transition he had built up a newfound courage and sought out a new purpose in life and eventually decided to join the Marine Corps.After serving for multiple years and becoming the rank of First Lieutenant, Billy left the marines. Deciding he wanted something that he deemed would be more helpful to people he worked hard and got into the FBI. This was revealed to be Operation Cerberus which tasked them with the capture, interrogation and assassination of high profile targets.After an ambush, Billy told Frank that he requested a transfer as he couldn’t keep doing the work that Cerberus gave them, insisting that Frank leave too.COMING HOME.After leaving the Marine Corps, Billy was contacted by William Rawlins to assist in illegal operations. In turn Billy received a financial reward from this and created his own company, ANVIL, a private military firm. From here he recruited former US Soldiers to become his personal army in a way.Never having power in life, Billy gained a lust for it, even going so far to betray Frank by allowing Rawlins to have Frank’s family assassinated as it was believed that Frank had a tape showing Cerberus Squad tor torturing and killing Ahmad Zubair, an officer of the Afghan National Police.Billy refused to take any part in the assassination, but did nothing to stop it. Billy felt regret for this, but tried to push past it and focus on his company, putting the events in the back of his mind. Despite this, he had recurring nightmares of Frank’s family being killed.FIRST FIGHT AGAINST THE PUNISHER.Frank Castle was thought to be dead only for him to appear in New York. Not wanting word of the evil things that could tarnish William Rawlins’ reputation to get out, he tasked Billy with trying to contact his old friend so that they can take him out before he and Homeland Security can find out the truth of what happened in Cerberus. Billy is conflicted at first, but at the same time he doesn’t want to lose everything he has now. Everything that makes him happy.While working on tracking down Frank, Billy keeps a close eye on their old friend Curtis Hoyle just in case he happens to know where Frank is. Rawlins tasks Billy with also keeping an eye on Dinah Madani who was Zabair’s partner. Billy ends up sleeping with her to gain her trust and to keep a low profile.Billy eventually gets in contact with Frank again and they meet at the pier. Billy says that he can help Frank forget everything and live a new life somewhere, when in reality he’s hoping to lead him to Rawlins. Unfortunately Frank never showed at the assigned meeting time leading Billy and Rawlins to have to consider new options.As Dinah gets closer to finding out the truth Billy and his soldiers at ANVIL are forced into a shootout with Homeland. Billy is almost captured by Dinah’s new work partner, Sam Stein - who had been suspicious of Billy from the start. Sam unmasks Billy and Billy takes advantage of his shock, stabbing him to death before he has the chance to tell Dinah that he was involved.(SEASON 2 CANON DIVERGENCE BEGINS HERE)HOSPITALIZATION & LOSS OF SELF.The police arrested Billy after the incident on the carousel and sent him to Sacred Hearts Hospital. There he was worked Due to the trauma from his fight with Frank, Billy had lost parts of his memory. Anything that had happened in the past few years had become unknown to him. The last thing that he remembered was being in the marines. Billy’s face had become extremely disfigured with scars littering his face. Some of them healed, but the deepest scars stayed.Dinah Madani kept visiting Billy, but due to the trauma of having his head smashed he couldn’t remember her.During therapy with Krista Dumont, his appointed therapist. Billy gets a mask and decorates it with the appearance of scars, how damaged his psyche feels. Billy has frequent nightmares with skull, blood and glass shattering. He insists that they’re nothing. Just dreams.Billy found out that the doctor’s planned to keep inducing his nightmares to hope that he could control them. Billy and Krista ended up arguing over Billy’s memories and his treatment plan. The guards stepped in and Billy subdued them. Then, with the (forced) help of Krista Dumont Billy escaped the hospitalBECOMING JIGSAW.After escaping the hospital, Billy returned to New York City.
